Troubleshoot Surface pen tip and button not working, but Bluetooth and eraser work.

One of my Microsoft Surface pens (model 1710) started to exabit a strange behavior recently. It would connect fine to my Surface Book, and both the eraser and eraser button would work as intended, but both the tip and the side button would not provide any interactions. After doing some research, I was able to find out that this is somewhat a common issue without any warning signs. After going down a rabbit hole about this pen I stumbled upon a video by Konstantin Sachkov in which he did a teardown of his Surface pen, which was exhibiting the same issues. It appears that this strange behavior is a result of electrostatic discharge and the failure of an internal ESD damage mitigation chip failing. It looks like the problem can be fixed with the right tools. Checkout Konstantin’s video below.
